At the Coolhorse Leather Shop in Amarillo, Texas, the leather craftsmanship is alive and growing, giving thanks in part to the talents of James "Wes" Mastic. A seasoned saddlemaker and leather artist, Wes brings more than 20 years of experience, award-winning skill, and a cowboy’s insight into every piece of tack he builds.
Born in Arizona and raised across Wyoming and Nevada, Wes grew up surrounded by the western lifestyle. After high school, he found his way to Sul Ross State University in Alpine, TX, where a job at the legendary Big Bend Saddlery became a turning point in his life. There, he studied under Gary Dunshee, a renowned saddlemaker known for preserving the traditions and high standards of the craft.
Today, Wes has become an integral part of the Coolhorse Leather Shop team. His background as a working cowboy gives him a deep understanding of what cowboys truly need. Whether it’s a saddle that fits like a glove or tack that stands up to long days on the ranch. His work can be trusted by any cowboy or cowgirl who values craftsmanship, comfort, and tack that is built to last.
Wes has earned multiple Best of Show awards at the prestigious Trappings of Texas event, and his attention to detail is unmatched, right down to the stamping and carving tools he makes himself at home. That level of dedication shows in every custom saddle, headstall, and piece of tack he creates.
At Coolhorse, Wes continues to do what he does best: build tack that’s functional, beautiful, and built to last. Whether you’re looking for a custom saddle or need a repair done right, you’ll find Wes in the Leather Shop, bringing the cowboys vision to life.
