Don't let these Horse Health Products Freeze!

stacey |

With yet another freeze warning out for tonight, I feel compelled to issue my annual warning. Some horse health products will not survive being frozen! Specifically Lubrisyn, Vetericyn, and most de-wormers say not to allow them to freeze. Please be sure to take these items home and keep them safe and warm indoors. If they freeze, they will become ineffective and cease to benefit your horse. Other products (even without a warning on the label) could become less effective when they freeze and thaw, especially if it happens repeatedly. I have personally had some grooming products after freezing and thawing thicken to the point that the sprayers on my bottles were ruined. Fly sprays, liquid supplements, hoof dressings, leather cleaner, or any other liquids could potentially be effected. Take a few minutes to scan your grooming tote, tack trunk, saddle shed, tack room, barn or trailer and round up any non-essential liquids. Storing all of your liquid items indoors in a climate controlled environment would be best, but that is not always possible. If you have an insulated freeze-proof room (such as an office or restroom) in your barn those areas might work perfectly. If not, you may have to get a little creative. I like to take extra fly spray and grooming products into the garage that is attached to my home and store them next to an interior wall and well away from the windows. This offers them some protection without bringing them into my overcrowded house. For the items without a warning on the label that I am still using on a daily basis, I do risk it and keep them in the barn. To give them a little protection, I put them in the tack room away from exterior walls. My father uses an old non-working fridge or deep freeze to help insulate things in his shop, and that could be a good solution for short cold spells in a moderate climate. Do you have any other tricks to keep your liquids safe through the winter? We would love to see your solutions in the comments, you can leave them here, on facebook, twitter or google+.
