CO/LP Detectors for Carbon Monoxide and Propane Leaks in Horse Trailers

Safety First is something we all talk about and practice when around Livestock, this should not be any different when we are talking about trailers with living quarters. Most of today’s trailers with living quarters are equipped with propane to run such items as furnaces, hot water heaters, refrigerators and in some cases the generators. A leak of this gas can be very dangerous causing fires and explosions. Another danger that can be even more deadly and is odorless and colorless is Carbon Monoxide or CO. Potential sources of this danger can be anything from exhaust from a vehicle or generator, to a portable space heater or furnace. Both of these dangers can be detected with help from CO/LP detectors and are required by the RVIA (Recreational Vehicle Industry Association) on all Recreational Vehicles including Living Quarter Trailers. Just like smoke detectors they should be tested regularly and it is recommended that they be tested once a month. What most people don’t know is that these detectors have a life expectancy of only five years and must be replaced at this time. They also have an EOL signal (end of life signal) programmed to go off when the end is near, if this goes off, you can reset it and it will stay silent for 3-days, after 30 days (10 cycles) it will not be able to be muted. Here at Coolhorse we recommend that you practice Safety First and test all LP/Co detectors and Smoke detectors on a regular basis and when it comes time to replace, contact us for help in selecting one that is best for your unit.
