Hay and Straw as Bedding for Outdoor Animals

"Two Straw Please, Two Straw" That has been the order of the day today over the radio to the warehouse. Amarillo's "Black Ice Friday" event has everyone fluffing up Fido's nest a little with the nasty weather we are having. With temperatures like these it is vitally important to keep your pets warm and out of the elements. Here at Coolhorse, we seem to have a running "Straw vs Hay" debate. I grew up bedding my show stock in wheat straw, so I fall on the straw side of the discussions. The hollow stems help to add a little insulation and it doesn't pack together as much as grass hay. This can help Fido fluff his nest and burrow in a little easier. Straw is often a little cleaner. Since the plant is dry before harvesting (versus grass hay that is laid down wet and allowed to cure in the sun) there are usually less allergens and since straw is a byproduct of a harvested grain crop there are usually far fewer weeds and a smaller price tag. On the grass hay side of the argument, the stems and leaves are both in the coastal grass hay and that gives it a finer texture. Dogs with thin coats or sensitive skin might find it to be quite a bit softer. The finer stems can also pack closer together leaving less gaps. That could be very beneficial if you have a smaller dog house without a lot of room for extra bedding. No matter which plant you choose, here are a couple tips. Be sure you change your bedding frequently to keep it clean and dust free. Fresh bedding is also a good way to keep the pests like fleas, ticks, and mange down as these bugs can hide in the plant matter (or in any bedding). If you live in a damp area, you can put a layer of wood shavings under the hay. While they won't do a lot to keep Fido warm and comfortable on their own they will help absorb moisture and keep your straw or hay fresher, longer. Don't forget, if you are in our local Amarillo area, you can order online and have your bedding order ready for pick up, or if you don't want to have to vacuum bits out of your car you can even have it delivered!
