Tips To Get Your Horse in a Trailer Successfully

If your horse has never been trailered before, your trailer probably looks like a big scary metal box to them. Even some of the most trained professionals have trouble loading their horses sometimes. Regardless of your level of expertise, considering these extra tips to get your horse in a trailer successfully will make your future travel much less stressful.
Let Them Be Curious and Comfortable First
If this is your horse’s first time in a trailer, don’t expect to load them right before you need to leave. You should practice many times beforehand and let your horse get comfortable at their own speed. Start by letting your horse walk the area your trailer is in so they can become acquainted and comfortable with the space.
Leave the doors open, as well, to let your horse become increasingly more curious on their own, rather than trying to guide them to the trailer when they aren’t ready yet.
Gradually Increase Their Experience With and Time on the Trailer
As your horse becomes more curious, they may begin to explore the inside of the trailer, such as putting their front legs in to check it out. Don’t force them inside at this point. Let them stand in the comfortable spot for a few minutes and then guide them back out, repeating this process. Continue to allow them to enter the trailer to whatever degree they are comfortable while increasing the amount of time they spend in said position.
Bring a Friend
This tip is for both you and the horse. Safety is a big concern with loading your horse. You’ll want your horse to enter the trailer safely, and you’ll want to protect yourself, as well, in case they become frightened. Have a partner help you load your horse so that multiple sets of eyes can catch if the horse begins to act frightened or there is a mishap with your trailer.
If you have multiple horses, try trailering them together first. This way, your horses can comfort one another when entering a situation that is unfamiliar to them.
Lure Them With Feed
If all else fails, using your horse’s feed as a lure is another great tip to get your horse in a trailer successfully. Use horse trailer accessories such as a trailer corner feeder at the front end of your trailer to motivate your horse to enter the trailer fully.
