Tying a Lead Rope to your Rope Halter PDF Print

There are two ways that I use to tie lead ropes onto my rope halters.  The first is a single wrap.  I use this if I have a really thick or stiff lead rope, or if it's a lead rope that I will be taking on and off of the halter often.

This second method has an extra wrap.  I use it with thinner lead ropes and on the halters that I know I won't be untying often.  It may not really be any more secure, but there is a firmer feel.  I really like this wrap when I am doing a lot of ground work, especially lateral softening and backing in the halter.

Using a running martingale PDF Print

Running martingales, like any training tool, can be beneficial when used correctly or a disaster if used wrong.  When used properly, a running martingale helps improve a horse's self carriage by causing him to fight himself when he is not working right.  When he gets into the proper position there is no pressure from the martingale and he finds the relief.

There are many styles of running martingales, and they all work in about the same way.  Material is a personal preference and there are options to fit any budget.   Leather, nylon, and string are the most common varieties, and prices range from aruond $70 to just $9.99*.

Read tips courtesy of Western Horseman from trainer Mike Major on how to properly adjust your martingale to get the most benifit.

*prices are as of 03/09/12 may change at any time.

Braided rawhide is one of the most universal styles you will see in the tack world.  You can spot beautifully braided pieces anywhere from a barrel race to a spring branding.  Cowboys and cowgirls have used rawhide tack for centuries due to it's longevity and style.

If you've ever wondered why hand braided rawhide tack carries a little more price tag than other types of gear, here is an article that describes some of the story behind hand made gear.  From curing and stripping the hides, to braiding and adorning, these steps are done by an artist with a vision for beauty and purpose.

In another article from Back At The Ranch, you can see individual pieces along with the stories of the makers.  Which one is your favorite?

The AQHA and NRHA both have an approved class called Freestyle reining .  The horse and rider have four minutes to perform a routine. Often time’s musical will also be incorporated. This class allows the opportunity to use reining maneuvers creatively. The horse and rider must complete a minimum of four consecutive spins to right and left, have to stop a least three times, and change lead both directions one time.

Innovative Impact Products L.L.C. developed Zoombang to protect against forces formerly impossible to guard against with traditional materials. Zoombang is a lightweight polymer material. It is soft, comfortable, and supportive at rest. But on impact, the material instantly changes to behave as an elastic solid, dissipating and transferring energy from blunt force trauma, shock, vibration, and outside g-forces. Zoombang provides unprecedented protection. It literally manages energy by dissipating and transferring it away from the body. Zoombang works to reduce injury and dramatically improve comfort for applications where protection is critical.
