Latigo

LatigoLatigo is an interesting word.  It has several distinct meanings.  It can be a comic strip from the early 80's or even a sporty automobile.  However, if you are talking tack, two meanings are common and easily confused.  Learn more about both meanings below.

A specific tanning process using alum and gambier results in a supple and durable leather called latigo leather.  This leather has a dark burgundy color, and it is commonly used for strap goods that need to be flexible but still strong.  Reins, rigging straps, saddle strings, and headstalls are commonly found crafted with this specific leather type.

The second tack-specific definition is simply the latigo - a strap used to secure the cinch to the saddle.  They are usually made of, you guessed it, latigo leather.  They can be nylon or other types of leather, but latigo leather is definitely the most traditional.  This strap is also available in two styles.  Latigo usually refers to a strap that ties on to the dee on the saddle on one end, then is looped from the rigging to the girth a couple of times, and then the cinch buckle hooks into the punched holes to secure the saddle.  This style is used exclusively for the near side of saddles.

On the off side, you have a choice.  The alternative is usually called an off-side latigo or a half breed latigo.  This strap does not tie on.  You fold it in half, ends pointing up with the cinch at the bottom.  Loop both tails through the dee toward the horse, then pull both tails together through the cinch ring, and secure the tongue of the cinch through the holes.

Ranchers or ropers who often pull large loads which require a tighter cinch often use a regular latigo on both sides.  People who ride several horses with one rig may also find it easier to use since it is easier to adjust.  You can adjust either side seperately without having to loosen both sides.  Also, some special riggings such as the adjustable riggings or three point riggings are easier to manipulate with a regular latigo on both sides.  Even with these advantages, an offside or half breed latigo is more commonly seen for it's simplicity.
