Absorbine - Family Owned

Not only has Absorbine and W.F. Young been a family owned company since it's beginning, the family has owned and been involved with horses through the generations.  Here is a great picture of Founders of W.F. Young, Wilbur and Mary Ida, on Claude and Jake.

Visit the Absorbine blog to see some great pictures of the family with their four legged compadres throughout the years.  To check out some of the newest releases from Absorbine to keep your horse silky, shiny, and tangle free, check out our blog.

What's in your horse feed?

Nutrena has a great series of blogs called "The Feed Room".  Different topics are covered from time to time, but here are a few that will really help you understand what you are feeding your horse, and why it is in your feed.  Two of the most common parts of a good feed ration are forage and grain.  Here is a blog from Nutrena's series that explains the types of grains most commonly found in horse feed.  Another blog talks briefly about the primary forarge types used by Nutrena.  Both of these will help you to understand and evaluate your current feed, or make a better informed choice on a new feeding regimen.

If you have special concerns, browse the topics that they have covered on the right side of the blog.  Some great topics you can find include tips on switching from one feed to another, colic concerns, senior horse care, mare and foal feeding, and many more.  If you have feed concerns that you do not see answer to there, let us know.  If you are in our local area, we would love to visit with about the feed choices we have available.  Unfortunately, we cannot ship horse feeds or hay, but we can ship many feed supplements that might help your situation, or we can try to help you find a representative from Nurtrena in your area.

Western Horseman recommends Vaquero Rawhide Cream

Rawhide braiding is a fine art.  The process of taking strips of near rock-hard untanned hide, making them pliable, and then transforming them into a work of art takes years to master.  And unfortunately, the resulting works of art can be destroyed by neglect in much less time.

This article from Western Horseman recommends several methods of caring for your rawhide gear.  One treatment they recommend for care (as well as one used by master craftsmen when braiding) is the Vaquero Rawhide Cream from Ray Holes.  This has been a favorite at Coolhorse for more than a decade to care for rawhide.  Try it out for yourself and you'll soon see why!

Finding the Sweet Spot

Horses have a 'sweet spot' where the cinch naturally wants to lay.  If you aren't sure how to find this sweet spot, look at your horse without a saddle on.  Find the narrowest part of your horse's rib cage.  Typically that will be about 4" behind his elbow, give or take a couple inches.

No matter where you position your saddle, during your ride the cinch will try it's darnedest to migrate to that sweet spot.  Do your horse a favor by starting your ride out at the sweet spot to avoid shifting.  This will help insure that you have the correct cinch length and that your cinch is just tight enough without being too tight.
