Calf Ropes 101

Today I received an email from a gentleman wanting to know why his Double SS & Viper calf ropes had such a mixed performance. He had gotten quite confused as to what kind of rope to try and wanted to educate himself on the variety.

doublessbycactusropesLet's start with the basics...

3 strand (such as the Double SS)- They are more recommended for beginning ropers because they have larger crowns and are more forgiving. They larger crowns make it easier to feel the tip of your rope.

4 strand- They are more durable and are more tolerant of all types of weather. Since the crowns are smaller, you will get a more snappy feel.

5 strand- As of right now, there is only one on the market but we'll get back to that when we discuss Rattler Calf ropes!

Lays: Most of the calf ropes are only available in an XS but the ropes that are they do make in a soft lay (& that we carry) are good for winter time roping since the ropes will get softer due to the cold weather. Then when we get back into warmer weather you will want to switch to an XS since the ropes will become stiffer with the weather.

Now we'll break it down by the 3 major brands that we carry:

Cactus Ropes :
All are made out of 100% texturized poly. Cactus Ropes features a non-slip grip... This means that after the initial jerk on the rope, the crowns will separate and allow the rope to stop without stretching out.

Rattler (Classic) :
Classic's patented Coretech technology allows more weight to be packed into a smaller area, resulting in a rope that weighs the same as a traditional 3/8" true rope, but has a smaller diameter. This type of construction also results in a rope that has more body & a longer life. You 5 strand Viper calf rope is a perfect example of this! Notice that the diameter is the same as a your 3 strand rope and since the crowns are larger on the Double SS it actually looks larger than the 5 strand.

Fast Back Ropes :
100% texturized poly. They carry a 3 strand & a 4 strand calf rope and pride themselves on low maintenance rope.

Last your materials:

Poly : The kind of "poly" you will find in your calf rope is Polyester. Rope makers use Polyester because the fibers have a high tenacity which is the measurement of strength. It also has a low water absorption rate and minimal shrinkage. Humidity will not effect these ropes. (Best sellers include Striker, Edge, & Viper)

Synthetic Grass : These are made out of synthetic manila grass fibers that have the feel of old polygrass ropes but do not require as much maintenance. Coolhorse carries the Dub Grant & Callaway syngrass ropes. Humidity does not effect the rope. They are available in the following sizes:
54 (equivalent to 10.0)
57 (equivalent to 10.25)
60 (equivalent to 10.5)

Polygrass: As of right now, nobody is able to get the grass to make these ropes. These ropes have no stretch and are the more traditional rope found in calf roping. Humidity and temperature will effect effect Polygrass ropes.

Please do not hesitate to let me know if you have any other questions or would like help finding a Calf rope to try out. Also, be sure to check out Winterize Your Ropes blog to make sure your ropes are ready to go in the spring! We even have all the other supplies you will need.

Happy Trails,
Abby B.
