Winterizing Your Trailer
It's time to winterize your trailer. During a recent interview, Jimmy Stockett, our shop foreman, explained why winterizing is so important.

Why winterize?

Jimmy:  Winterizing keeps the pipes and water pump in your trailer from freezing and cracking during the winter months.

When should I have my trailer winterized?

Jimmy:  I recommend that you winterize as soon as the evening temperatures start approaching freezing.

I use my trailer all winter.  Is it necessary to winterize?

Jimmy:  No, if you're planning to use your trailer throughout the winter months, then it isn't necessary to winterize.  I do recommend, however, that you drain your fresh water tanks after each use, empty gray and black tanks after each use, leave your hot water heater on and either leave your furnace on or use a space heater when your trailer is not being used.  It's also a good idea to leave drawers, closets and cabinet doors open during these periods so the warm air can reach all plumbing.  As a rule of thumb, if your trailer is going to sit unused for more than a month you should winterize.

Can I winterize my trailer myself?

Jimmy:  You can, but I suggest you have a service center do it simply because there are several steps to the process and one missed step could mean broken pipes later.

It rarely freezes where I live.  Should I still winterize?

Jimmy:  Not necessarily.  If temperatures in your part of the country only hit freezing a few times a year, then I wouldn't bother with winterizing.  I would use a space heater, just in case.
