Due to advancements in technology over the years, and the introduction of Coretech technology in Classic/Rattler 4 and 5 strand ropes, we have seen ropers using a softer lay. The main reason for this is with the Core in the Classic/Rattler ropes there is more "body" and the rope is more stable, allowing the roper to feel the tip with loop staying open easier.

Here are a few recommendations on lays pertaining to a ropers style:

For Headers, the lay of rope they use is determined many times by the horn size of the cattle. For bigger/wider horns a stiffer lay is preferred. For small/shorter horns a softer lay is recommended. Most common lays are: Extra Soft and Soft.

For Heelers, the lay of rope they use is determined by their swing/delivery style. Heelers wanting to feel the tip of their rope more with a slower more controlled delivery will prefer a softer lay.
Heelers with an aggressive swing can use a harder lay.
Most common lays are: Medium Soft and Medium

With everyday advancements in technology we have been able to fine tune the lays of our ropes to help a roper find a lay which is best suited for their style and preference.
