To measure your horse for a winter horse blanket or sheet you'll need your horse, a measuring tape and a helper.
Step 1.) Have your helper hold the tape measure at the center of your horse's chest directly below where his neck ties in.
Step 2.) Measure around the horse's side, being sure to keep the tape across the widest part of his shoulder and hip.
Step 3.) End your measurement right against the edge of his tail (not the center of the tail).
As you can see, Flash measures right at 80 inches, so a "size 80" is a perfect fit for him.

Turnout or stable blanket? What's the difference?
If your horse isn't close and easy to measure here is a guide to give you a rough estimate. Measuring your horse is always best to get a perfect fit, but this should get you close.
| | weanling | yearling | small horse | average horse | large horse | | thin build | 52-58 | 60-62 | 68-70 | 72-74 | 76-78 | | average build | 56-58 | 64-66 | 72-74 | 76-78 | 80-82 | | heavy muscled | 60-62 | 68-70 | 76-78 | 80-82 | 84-86 |
*These are rough guidelines only. Horses can vary greatly by breed, and young horses will vary by foaling date. To get an exact size you should measure your horse. Using a measuring tape start at the center of the horse's chest, go around the side of the horse to the edge of the tail. This works best if you have a helper and one of you can take each end of the tape. Move it around to be sure you are measuring across the heaviest muscled portions of the chest and hip.
