Did you know that there are two different kinds of Poly? Polyester & Polyurethane The kind of "poly" you will find in your favorite team or calf rope is Polyester. Rope makers use Polyester because the fibers have a high tenacity which is the measurement of strength. It also has a low water absorption rate and minimal shrinkage. You can find this material in your fabrics as well as your tires. Polyurethane is a lighter and more stretchy material and can stretch up to 500% of its natural state. This would be like using a rubber band as a rope! However, it can also be used to replace matel and can be as hard a bowling ball. Items made of Polyurethane range from baby toys to airplane wings.
